英國內政大臣梅伊（Theresa May）出任新首相，這是繼1990年「鐵娘子」佘契爾夫人辭去首相後，唐寧街10號再次有女人當家。梅伊最為人樂道的特質是嚴謹、勤奮，與執政保守黨內的陰謀、同志操戈沾不上邊，因而在這次黨魁暨首相之爭中，獲得多位高層力挺，提前出線。
59歲的梅伊2013年透露她罹患糖尿病，必須終生與胰島素為伍，後來被問及這病對她的影響，她淡淡地說，就像人生，「唯有接受它、處理它。」就是這種鋼鐵般的意志，讓她在英國決定脫歐後保守黨內鬥中，異軍突起。
梅伊還自述：「我不是作秀型政治人物，不會一天到晚上電視，也不喜八卦、道人長短，不會在國會的酒吧喝酒閒聊。」同仁克拉克形容她是「難纏至極的女人」，意志堅定如鋼，不輸佘契爾夫人。其實梅伊務實強硬的一面，也常被拿來和同是牧師之女的德國總理梅克爾比較。
梅伊12歲就加入保守黨，就學期間自覺「高人一等」。和原首相卡麥隆、倫敦前市長強森一樣，畢業於牛津大學，只不過大學生涯比2人低調。
就讀大學期間， 梅伊認識了巴基斯坦前總理班娜姬．布托，並在她牽線之下認識了丈夫菲利浦．梅伊。兩人膝下無子，對此梅伊表示：「一直希望家裡增添新成員，但有些東西就是不可得。」梅伊愛穿著豹紋尖頭高跟鞋，也成為了新聞話題。
